The Forest of Avon, one of England's Community Forests, creates and cares for woodlands while providing opportunities for people to engage with nature. Over the last few years, the organisation has expanded its size and impact significantly. In 2023/24, they were responsible for planting nearly 50,000 trees, while their volunteers managed 22 hectares of existing woodland. They also hosted dozens of specialised well-being events for vulnerable individuals.

The organisation is always seeking innovative ways to carry out its mission. They operate the government's Trees for Climate program, which offers financial assistance to landowners who are establishing new woodlands. Additionally, they provide management advice to current woodland owners. Their health and well-being initiatives receive support from healthcare providers, and they also benefit from donations from individuals, businesses, and charitable trusts. Earlier this year, the Forest of Avon was asked to host the Western Forest, which is England's first national forest in more than 30 years. While the charity is already making a substantial difference, they aim to achieve even more.

They’re seeking a Chief Executive Officer to lead a highly committed Bristol-based team. The new CEO will continue the successful work of the organisation and take a fresh look at how the Charity can deliver its ambitious targets to 2030 and 2050 - looking at how the organisation plants trees, protects habitats, and connects people with nature.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Leading people and managing resources to ensure the charity operates effectively and achieves its strategic goals.

  • Building and maintaining strong partnerships with a diverse range of supporters and stakeholders, and clearly communicating the charity's work to a broad audience.

  • Delivering the Trees for Climate program and the Forest of Avon Plan, while monitoring and reporting on progress.

  • Guiding the direction and execution of the Western Forest project.

The successful candidate will approach challenges creatively, productively and collaboratively, and be able to mobilise people and organisations to act with a sense of purpose. They will have senior leadership experience across a diverse range of organisations, alongside an understanding of the environmental sector and the importance of woodland creation and land management. The successful candidate will also be skilled in programme delivery and have a solid understanding of finance, human resources, safeguarding, operations and governance.

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a forward-thinking organisation through an exciting new chapter.
