Trustees (2023)

The Roles:

St Monica Trust

The Client:

The Trust’s five retirement villages are all purpose-built to the highest standards. Each is a vibrant community of older people, mostly living independently in flats. Four of the villages include care homes with specialist dementia facilities. St Monica Trust supports local Charities and non-profit organisations through their endowment fund, helping provide services for the older people in the Greater Bristol area

For over 100 years, St Monica’s Trust has been creating communities where older people flourish, with the best ageing experience. The Charity was founded by Dame Monica Wills, with the vision of creating a ‘purpose-built haven’ for those unable to look after themselves.

In 2021, we placed Trustees who would expand the Board’s skills and evolve the organisation’s strategic direction. Following this project's positive impact, the Charity sought our expertise in 2023 to recruit two more Trustees. The Charity was undertaking a new branch of activity and needed experienced leaders to guide them through this journey. We were thrilled to collaborate with them once again.

Trustees guide the Charity’s management team, providing specialist advice and setting long-term objectives. They needed Trustees with an in-depth knowledge of social care for older people, experienced in the operational, risk and regulatory aspects of care provision. The new Trustees would also guide a new branch of the Charity’s activities. This involved developing their work as a charitable foundation - funding innovation in services for older people, research and workforce development. The Charity would be providing greater support to organisations that help older people connect, contribute to the community, and generally thrive. As such, one of the Trustees needed to be experienced in driving social change, ideally from within the health and care sector. Furthermore, one of the Trustees would be appointed on behalf of the Bishop of Gloucestershire, therefore a connection to the local area was highly desirable.

Sandy Hinks, Head of Moon’s Charity Practice, oversaw the search. We conducted national and local advertising campaigns to uncover candidates with the required skills and experience. Sandy's meticulous screening and interview process unearthed the ideal candidates to propel the Charity towards its goals. Our recommended candidates, both highly impressive, went on to have successful interviews with the Board panel and in-depth discussions with the CEO. Reflecting this positive assessment, St Monica Trust appointed them as Trustees.

The Trustees that were appointed were Dr Jonathan Shapiro and James Rimmer.

Dr Shapiro has extensive experience providing strategic advice and practical solutions to healthcare organisations. He has a track record in Board roles for Charitable organisations, helping them drive social change and increase their positive impact. Mr Rimmer, who has a strong connection to Bristol & the South West, brings a wealth of senior leadership experience at healthcare organisations. His expertise in improving service quality while managing stakeholder relationships impressed us during the screening process. This specific combination of Trustees adds an extra dimension to St Monica’s Trust and prepares them to succeed in their latest endeavour.

Sandy Hinks commented:

“For this search campaign, we had to find the best-suited candidates from both a local and national pool. We searched on both scales and discovered some outstanding candidates. We’re thrilled that our recommendations were appointed as Trustees, and we’re sure they will help St Monica Trust make a difference for older people in the Greater Bristol area.

Tim Ross, President of St Monica Trust, commented:

“Moon found Trustees that enhance our Board and enabled us to increase our impact for older people in Bristol and surrounding areas.”
