Trustees

The Roles:

Active Gloucestershire

The Client:

The Charity envisions a Gloucestershire where everyone lives a healthy and happy life. They aim to achieve this through we can move, a social movement uniting people behind a shared vision of increased activity. This initiative provides opportunities for an active lifestyle by connecting individuals with community groups, schools, local authorities, and national organisations such as Sport England.

Active Gloucestershire were seeking two Trustees who could increase reach and help implement their 2030 strategy. We have a strong relationship with the Charity, having assisted them with many appointments, including their Strategic Manager, Senior Insight Officer and Communications Officer. We enjoyed our previous collaborations with them and were excited to renew our partnership on this campaign.

Active Gloucestershire inspires and empowers people to enhance their lives through physical activity. Recognising that physical activity is key to improving well-being, and that social inequalities can hinder access to it, they remove barriers so everyone can benefit from an active lifestyle.

A key challenge of this search was finding talented individuals able to commit their time to an unremunerated role. Active Gloucestershire were looking for strategic thinkers who could remain objective and focused on the bigger picture during decision-making. Furthermore, candidates had to be passionate about improving lives through physical activity and ideally experienced in Charity leadership or health/wellbeing.

Sandy Hinks, Head of Moon’s Charity Practice led the campaign. We combined headhunting and targeted advertising to identify candidates who could enhance Active Gloucestershire’s governance. This revealed a pool of promising candidates which was refined to a shortlist through an interview process. We presented the shortlist to Active Gloucestershire, with a report outlining how each candidate could contribute towards the Charity’s vision. The Board was impressed by the candidates we presented, ultimately appointing five Trustees, rather than the planned two.

The following candidates were placed as Trustees, bringing a wide range of skills and experience to Active Gloucestershire.

Sheema Rahman is a healthcare leader with a deep commitment to health equity. As Head of Health Inequalities and Healthy Hospitals for Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, she brings experience addressing systemic barriers to health and wellbeing. Her inclusive leadership and expert perspective will be invaluable as Active Gloucestershire seeks to create a healthier community for all.

Dr Rachael Bullingham is a renowned academic and advocate for diversity and inclusion in sport. She is a  Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at Gloucestershire University with a research background focused on the social and cultural factors that impact physical activity. Dr Bullingham’s expertise will enable Active Gloucestershire to develop innovative programs that cater to diverse community needs.

Mark Golledge is an experienced public sector leader with a proven track record delivering impactful health and social care initiatives. As Programme Director for NHS Gloucestershire, he brings a strategic mindset and a strong focus on collaboration and partnerships. These skills will be crucial as Active Gloucestershire implements its 2030 strategy.

Judi Bonham is a respected legal professional with a strong commitment to social justice. She is the Managing Director at WSP Solicitors, bringing strong leadership and an understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals and families. Her passion for community empowerment will help Active Gloucestershire create a more inclusive and equitable society.

Sandy Hinks commented:

It was an absolute pleasure to work with Active Gloucestershire once again. The search produced a group of very talented individuals, we were delighted when the Board decided to appoint five Trustees instead of the original two. We’re confident the placed Trustees will help Active Gloucestershire expand their impact and achieve the goals of their 2030 strategy.

Emma Owen, Chair of the Board of Trustees, commented:

One of the placed Trustees, Mark Golledge, was also complimentary of Sandy’s work:

“Thank you ever so much Sandy. It has been a pleasure - you and your team have been very organised and made the process very smooth!”
