The Roles:

South West Investment Group (SWIG)

The Client:

The South West Investment Group (SWIG) has been a key provider of debt finance to micro and small businesses for over 30 years. Their lending is integral to the finance ecosystem in the South West, providing funding that is often unavailable from banks and other SME financiers. SWIG maintains a significant regional footprint with frontline hubs in Bristol, Exeter, and Poole, a primary office in Truro, and Business Development Managers deployed throughout the region.

Operating as an impact-led lender, SWIG gauges its achievements through economic and social impact, adhering to the principles of the UN’s Social Development Goals. All generated profits are reinvested to facilitate additional impact lending. SWIG manages external funds through contracts with the Start-Up Loans Company and the British Business Bank as well as investing own funds. Recognising the role of strong leadership in achieving these goals, we partnered with SWIG to strengthen their Board with skilled Non-Executive Directors (NEDs).

Our national search campaign, which included targeted advertising and headhunting, resulted in a very large pool of qualified candidates. There was a huge volume of enthusiastic responses from the business community, particularly from the South West, underscoring SWIG's vital role in the region's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Through a selective interview process, we refined the pool of candidates to the most impressive individuals who were a good cultural fit for SWIG. We produced a detailed report, outlining the strengths of each candidate, and how they could positively impact the organisation. Although initially looking for two NEDs, SWIG ultimately appointed four of our recommended candidates: Carmen Peacock, Gonzalo Truijilo, Harry Partington, and David McCarthy.

“Vanessa and Simon were fantastic, finding candidates with diverse skillsets who add a new layer of expertise to our Board. The fact that we appointed four new NEDs from the excellent pool of candidates speaks volumes.”

Our successful collaborations with SWIG on previous senior leadership placements, including NEDs and Chair, led them to approach us again to oversee this NED search. We were excited to renew our partnership and identify candidates who could make a significant contribution. Vanessa Moon, our Founding Director, led the search campaign alongside Simon Quinn, our Director of Executive Search. They initiated the process by holding in-depth discussions with SWIG’s leadership, precisely identifying knowledge gaps and skill sets that would enhance the Board.

Non-Executive Directors at SWIG ensure that good governance and business practices are in place. They help develop the Group’s strategy and culture while mitigating risks and overseeing internal controls. As such, they sought candidates with a strong corporate background and experience in a senior Board positions. Key criteria also included start-up experience, familiarity with the funding journey typical of businesses SWIG supports, and fintech sector knowledge.

Vanessa Moon, commented:

“It was amazing to work with SWIG once again. This campaign generated a huge amount of interest, with many highly qualified candidates very enthusiastic to get involved with SWIG. The challenge was to carefully narrow the field, pinpointing the individuals whose specific skills and experience would most effectively strengthen SWIG's current Board.”
