Moon Executive Search and Ashfords demystify NED accountability at techSPARK

We joined forces with Ashfords last week at the techSPARK Bristol Technology Festival to host a workshop titled, Staying ahead: risk, compliance and boardroom responsibility for Non Execs. The session offered attendees a roadmap for navigating the complexities of governance in today’s fast-evolving business landscape.

The challenge of boardroom duties

In an environment where board roles offer immense strategic value, they also carry significant legal and fiduciary duties that are frequently overlooked. Acknowledging that over 80% of business transformations fail due to poor governance and risk management, the workshop aimed to demystify what Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) must understand about risk, compliance, and boardroom accountability. The session also explored how founders can strategically position themselves to maximise board impact.

The session was delivered by a panel of experts:

●      Laura Guest, Senior Associate in Ashfords’ Corporate Team, who brought expertise in advising clients on M&A, fundraising, and corporate reorganisations.

●      Vanessa Moon, Moon Executive Search’s Founding Director and a seasoned Non-Executive Director and Advisor herself, who shared over 30 years of senior management and board-level recruitment experience.

●      Gemma Wilks, Head of our Management, Engineering & Technical (MET) Practice, who provided strategic insight on NED responsibilities and talent acquisition across her specialist sectors.

Supporting the Bristol tech community

The enthusiasm and energy demonstrated the Bristol tech community’s strong commitment to robust governance and professional development.

“It was fantastic connecting with so many engaged leaders at techSPARK,” said Vanessa Moon, “Effective leadership at board level is essential, and we were proud to partner with Ashfords to share our practical insights. We look forward to celebrating the next great achievements across the Bristol tech landscape.”
