Insane Root Theatre Searching for Board Trustees

·      Location: Bristol

·      Salary: unpaid, voluntary positions

·      Commitment: attend board meetings (expected to be 4 per year) and an Annual General Meeting.

Insane Root Theatre CIO is an award-winning Bristol-born theatre company specialising in the creation of bespoke theatre productions in heritage and community spaces. Their unique performances are intimate, narrative-driven, immersive experiences.

They recognise that traditional theatre venues and styles of performance can seem ‘exclusive’ or off-putting and aim to make theatre more accessible by providing an alternative, rooted in the history of the places they find. Between 2015 and 2022, they produced eight full-length, site-specific productions including Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Hansel & Gretel.

They are now looking to recruit high-calibre individuals, to join their Board of Trustees to oversee exciting projects planned for 2024. Trustees will ensure that the charity is independently governed and acts in accordance with its constitution. They will manage the charity’s affairs and apply its resources in furtherance of the charitable purposes. Some of their key responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic leadership for the charity, setting strategy and goals, and evaluating and reviewing progress and outcomes.

  • To ensure the Charity complies with its governing document and with the law.

  • Acting as an ambassador for the Charity including presenting regular reports to the Trustee Board.

  • Ensuring the financial stability and solvency of the Charity.

In terms of personal qualities, they are seeking to recruit confident, dynamic individuals who are willing to commit some time to seeing them grow and develop.  You will need to have good strategic planning and organisational skills, a passion for, and an understanding of, the Charity and its aims. You will need to use your business or community network to promote what the Charity is looking to achieve.  You will be ambitious, tenacious, and not afraid to make ‘the ask’.

Ideally, the successful candidate will have experience of being a trustee, non-executive, or senior manager. They will need strong networking skills and a willingness to develop relationships to help secure funding from private individuals, trusts, and companies.

The Company is looking for several Trustees with a range of experiences and capabilities that could include anyone from backgrounds such as Finance, Fundraising, General Business, and Legal. If you have a passion for attending live performance, as well as heritage, education and making theatre accessible and fun, this could be the role for you.
