CVS (Community and Voluntary Services) South Gloucestershire supports, develops and represents the local voluntary and community sector. They believe that every voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) should be valued, understood and well-managed - building stronger communities and positively impacting people’s lives. We helped them place a Chief Executive who could lead the organisation into the future.

For over 20 years, the Charity has been empowering local people to come together and take collective action. Their activities encompass a wide range of areas, such as:

  • Working with communities to find and deliver solutions.

  • Providing high-quality services to develop voluntary organisations.

  • Supporting community groups to share expertise and become leaders.

  • Ensuring the community has a strong voice, and concerns are heard.

  • Promoting Active Citizenship in South Gloucestershire.

The organisation was aiming to expand their reach and further develop the local VCSE sector. They were seeking a CEO to lead them through this exciting period of growth and approached us for assistance with the placement. Having not worked with the Charity previously, we relished the opportunity to learn more about them and contribute to South Gloucestershire’s VCSE sector.

The most challenging aspect of this campaign was finding candidates with wide-ranging knowledge and a balance of leadership and hands-on business skills. The CEO needed a strong grasp of the VCSE sector and South Gloucestershire's demographics to effectively lead the Charity's diverse activities. Furthermore, they were seeking candidates with the ability to influence policy and decision-making and a track record of successful leadership across multiple organisations and networks.

The search campaign was orchestrated by Gemma Wilks, Head of Moon’s Management, Engineering and Technical (MET) Practice. Our MET Practice team is experienced across a broad spectrum of organisations, enabling them to understand the unique challenges and opportunities when operating in many different areas.

To identify the best CEO candidates for CVS Gloucestershire, we employed a multi-faceted approach. This included actively headhunting potential leaders, strategically targeted advertising efforts, and leveraging Moon's extensive network. This comprehensive approach resulted in a diverse pool of talented individuals.

Through a rigorous selection process, we narrowed down the field, conducting in-depth interviews with the most promising candidates. One candidate, Hannah Mahoney, particularly impressed our team with her leadership qualities and deep understanding of the challenges facing urban and rural communities.

We presented a shortlist of candidates to CVS, recommending Ms Mahoney as our top choice for the position. The Board were equally impressed by her qualifications and demeanour. Subsequently, they appointed Hannah Mahoney as the new CEO.

With 20 years of experience spanning the charity, public, and private sectors, Ms Mahoney possesses strong leadership skills and business acumen. She brings an in-depth understanding of the VCSE sector, particularly the unique challenges faced by various communities within South Gloucestershire. These challenges include, but are not limited to, language barriers, socioeconomic deprivation, limited access to services, transportation issues, and community engagement. Furthermore, Ms Mahoney’s experience delivering complex projects across partnerships and organisations will enable the Charity to expand its impact and make a real difference in communities.

Gemma and her team provided us with a diverse shortlist of impressive candidates. Hannah stood out as the ideal choice to lead our Charity forward due to her vast experience and understanding of the challenges faced in South Gloucestershire.
— Sue Parsons, Interim Chair of the Board of Trustees, CVS South Gloucestershire
