Trustees (2024)

The Roles:

Hammersmith United Charities

The Client:

One of the Charity's primary initiatives is providing high-quality, affordable housing to older individuals who have been displaced by increased housing costs. Their Almshouses offer a welcoming and supportive environment, complete with beautiful gardens and excellent facilities.

In addition to housing, Hammersmith United Charities supports community-led organisations working to create a more equitable society. Through their grants program, the Charity allocates £380,000 annually to local community organisations. Furthermore, they are actively involved in community action, fostering partnerships between businesses, community groups, and local government. The organisation is instrumental in addressing the needs of vulnerable individuals and strengthening community connections.

Hammersmith United Charities has been supporting local people for over 400 years. Hammersmith is a vibrant and diverse community, rich in cultural assets, global businesses and esteemed academic institutions. However, the area is also characterised by extreme levels of inequality, with London’s busiest food bank located side-by-side with luxury developments. The Charity addresses the area's stark inequalities by providing essential support to the local community.

Hammersmith United Charities were seeking two Trustees. One to join their Housing and Property Committee and another for the Finance and Investment Committee. We’ve worked with them previously, helping find five Trustees in 2019. The success of that search campaign, led to them approaching us again when new Trustees were needed. They required leaders who could bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role, alongside broadening the Board’s diversity of thought. They sought candidates with strong financial skills and experience in either senior management, social housing or property development and maintenance.

Sandy Hinks, Head of Moon’s Charity Practice coordinated the search campaign. Through targeted advertising and headhunting we discovered skilled professionals who were passionate about the organisation’s mission. The Charity were open to applicants from across London but were particularly enthusiastic about individuals with a connection to Hammersmith and Fulham. At their request, we presented a selection of candidates, alongside a detailed report on each individual's strengths and weaknesses, and how they could make a difference in the organisation. Following additional interviews, two of our recommended candidates were appointed as Trustees.

Derek Williams is the Managing Director of a global real estate investment firm and a former Chartered Surveyor. He brings significant experience in governance, regulations, and risk management to the Finance and Investment Committee. Mr Williams’ property-focused finance skills impressed our selection team. Furthermore, his background as an Independent Advisor to Transport for London’s £2bn housing portfolio adds significant expertise to the Committee. Through his involvement in numerous Charities, it was evident that Mr Williams is committed to driving positive change in the community.

Kevin Griffiths was appointed to the Housing and Property Committee. Mr Griffiths is the General Manager of a property solutions company, specialising in repairs, energy services, health and safety, and sustainability. He brings a wealth of knowledge on housing maintenance in a commercial environment. Hammersmith United Charities were excited by Mr Griffiths, as his expertise fills a major skills gap on the Housing Committee and enhances the leadership capabilities of the organisation.

Sandy Hinks commented:

“It was fantastic to work with Hammersmith United Charities once again. The placed candidates, Kevin and Derek, are accomplished individuals who strengthen the Charity’s ability to make a difference in the community.”

Victoria Hill, Hammersmith United Charities CEO, commented:

“All of the candidates were really high-quality, with good skills and experience”
