Vanessa Moon: Why I Started Moon

I never set out to build just another Executive Search firm.

I started Moon because I believed there was a better, more personal way to connect leaders with opportunities and, in turn, connect businesses with the communities they serve.

I’d spent years in corporate environments – as part of some fantastic, high-performing teams. I brought a lot of lessons from that time into conceiving Moon, but when I went into business in 2000, my vision was simple: offer a bespoke service that puts relationships first.

I wanted to work with clients, not above them or apart from them. I wanted candidates to feel seen, not processed. I wanted a business where being ethical, inclusive, and genuinely collaborative wasn’t a value on a wall – it was the way we worked every day.

An Open Door

Our values are to be distinctive, ethical and approachable, and the approachable part really matters.

We strive to be highly professional, but also friendly – because breakthroughs so often come from informal, candid conversations. Board appointments are some of the biggest decisions you’ll make, and you need to be honest and open through the process. Breaking down any perceived barriers helps build trust, which is invaluable. You need a friend when making the big appointments. Equally, our candidates need one when navigating a C-Suite career. I’ve worked with plenty of people on both sides of that coin – candidates who have become clients and vice versa – because they know that we deliver lasting solutions that work for everyone long-term.

And I really think that’s why we’re still going strong after 25 years. We don’t just work with clients on a campaign; we stand with them through their journeys.

For Bristol and the South-West

We chose to be in Bristol and make a long-standing commitment to be part of the local business & non-profit ecosystem. It’s a special place and a real community, buzzing with innovation, enterprise, and social purpose – with lots of other organisations reflecting our values. While we’ve worked across the country and internationally, there have been so many opportunities close to home – opportunities to grow, help others grow, and also to give back. I’ve been lucky to have held several board positions as a trustee and chair of some amazing organisations that align with my passions and causes I care about.

Innovating as a Team

A massive motivation for starting Moon was building my own team and seeing them grow and support each other.

People often don’t think of it like this, but exec search demands a lot of innovation. We deliver creative solutions and think outside the box to unearth world-class talent and continually deliver results. It’s high-pressured, but it’s work that we all love. The constant cycle of being challenged, adapting, growing, and succeeding is hugely rewarding – but only if the culture you create is positive and everyone bounces off each other and lifts each other up. I’m so proud of how many members of the team have progressed over years of working at Moon.

That was the vision, and I’d like to think we’ve created an environment where anyone can speak up, contribute and grow.

There’re always ways we can improve, but seeing the impact that our placements make, and our close network adapting to challenges and taking opportunities fuels me on.

It’s been 25 years, and I’m just as energised by the work as I was on day one. Because at the heart of it all, this is still personal to me.
