For over 30 years, Second Step has been putting mental health first, helping people and communities in the South West to build brighter futures. They work actively within the mental health, homelessness and complex needs sectors, supporting individuals with common mental health concerns and severe needs.
Second Step's services are recovery and strengths-based, deeply rooted in psychological and trauma-informed practices. Their holistic approach consists of direct support, developing skills, navigation to other services, and, in some cases, providing practical help like housing. They empower people by fostering resilience, self-agency, self-management skills, peer support, and community connections.
The organisation has secured a bid to deliver mental health and well-being services across Bath, Swindon, and Wiltshire. This comes at a pivotal time as the mental health sector undergoes major transformation with the new Community Mental Health Framework and the introduction of the Integrated Care System. Challenges persist, including high demand, increasing need, and pressure on Local Authority and NHS budgets. As Second Step take on this increased responsibility, they’re seeking a Trustee who can help them meet current and future governance demands, while retaining the values, mission and vision of the organisation.
As a Trustee, your primary responsibilities will include:
Ensuring that appropriate business and financial plans and budgets are in place.
Developing policies, procedures, and other governance arrangements.
Overseeing reporting, monitoring and action of financial control and risk management frameworks.
Providing support to senior managers and key partners.
Representing Second Step as an ambassador.
Second Step are looking for motivational candidates, skilled in strategic decision-making and with Senior Management experience. The ideal candidate will be able to analyse business information and implement a course of action that supports medium and long-term objectives. They will have an understanding of governance arrangements in the nonprofit, charitable, NHS, statutory or social enterprise sectors and be adept at building relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Furthermore, you will share the values of Second Step and be passionate about creating brighter futures through mental health support.
