The Cote Charity

The Client

The Cote Charity comprises a 41-bed residential care home in Katherine House and an eight-bed dementia unit in Griffiths House. Both are located adjacent to each other on Cote Lane in Westbury-on-Trym.

In addition, the Cote Charity has several let properties which fall within the Care Manager’s responsibility. The Almshouse Charity has 12 residents located on St Michael’s Hill in Bristol. Both Charities are managed by The Society of Merchant Venturers. The foundations of the Cote Charity are based on good company, amazing staff, stimulating activities, excellent communication, and the freedom for older people to make the most of every day.

The Challenge

The Cote charity required an experienced and qualified Care Manager, ideally from within the Care sector, driven by the desire to make a positive difference to the quality of life for older people. Experience and expertise in dementia care were a crucial component of the brief, as was a track record of successful management and fostering an inclusive team environment where people could work well together and felt supported to grow in their roles.

The Care Manager would need to take charge of the day-to-day operations within the care setting, including recruiting and managing staff teams, managing budgets, and ensuring that the quality of the services provided meets and exceeds national care standards.

Our Approach

From extensive talks with the client, the team understood that the successful candidate would have a balance of relevant care sector qualifications and leadership. Finding candidates with a successful track record of leading a busy team was so important as was an ability to make the team around them feel valued and inspired to deliver an excellent level of care to residents.

The search focused on individuals that could develop a coherent and effective team that could provide quality care. The candidates were also asked about the strength of their IT skills, and ability to work flexibly and to manage and experience of working within a budget.

The successful candidate would need to be able to evidence their enthusiasm, energy and empathy for the role of Care Manager.

Our Outcome

After deliberation from the Board, they offered the role to Leanne Thorne. Her decade of experience as a manager of care homes across Bristol and Somerset was excellent. Leanne’s experience of providing care, strategy and leadership managing teams impressed and she spoke passionately about her natural empathy for residents and their family members.

Vanessa Moon, Founding Director of Moon Executive Search, said:

‘This search was very interesting to lead on, and Leanne’s strong experience of providing care was very impressive. We are pleased to have found such a diligent candidate to lead the team at Cote.’

Caroline Duckworth, CEO of the Society of Merchant Venturers said:

We were pleased that Vanessa and Sandy agreed to work with us on this search. We chose Moon because we understood how crucial this appointment was and how the Care Manager will help Cote create both structure and leadership for the team and stable and stimulating environments for the residents. During the interview, she demonstrated real passion and it was clear that about going the extra mile to ensure that residents enjoyed their lives with energy and integrity.’part of the city.’
