This £150m turnover, privately owned, manufacturing business was seeking to change its’ market presence and were looking at a major brand refresh and digitalisation project. They were seeking a new Business Development Director to lead on this and bring in someone with digital transformation, retail/FMCG and big brand experience.

The Challenge

The client also looking to expand internationally as to date their market was UK only. The company is highly successful and growing but needing to expand internationally. Their market was originally very traditional and needed refreshing. The Business Development Director needed strong digital and online experience. Our search was to look at other businesses going through the same ‘new market and ‘digital transformation’ scenario.

Therefore, a new role of Business Development Director was designed for the Group with a big emphasis on a leader that had been through a digital journey.

Our Approach

We bring significant experience recruiting Commercial Sales and Marketing and Digital Director roles at Board level with over 20 years’ experience of search working with a range of UK and International Private Equity Backed Groups and Privately-owned businesses.

The client wanted a leader to transform their e-commerce presence.

Our team have considerable knowledge and expertise in the digital arena and the effect of business transformation, and most recently the changing marketplace post-Covid and beyond. There is also the pace of change post-Covid as the business had to realign its strategy and route to market.

We were keen to bring in candidates who respected the heritage and longevity of the business but also understood the changes needed to grow their digital and online presence. This was a confidential niche head hunt looking at candidates from a range of businesses from retail, e-commerce, brand, FMCG and wholesale, all where their markets had changed in recent months.

We also put together a comprehensive candidate briefing recruitment pack, which we prepared in conjunction with key stakeholders, to include background information on the group, the context to the appointment, the relevant role profile, future plans and details on how to make a formal expression of interest. We conducted this search under an NDA.

We then briefed and met with candidates to assess them against the set criteria to compile our long list and question on key search elements. It was a fascinating search as the digital thread was most important.  

Our Solution

This was an extensive national search, and we were seeking real live expertise on delivering growth through change and that the person had precipitated that change. The outcome was that we sourced a Business Development Director from a licensed product environment and whose market had changed to be 100% online. They evidenced that they remained true to the brand and kept that at the heart of the transformation project.
